What is Custom CSS?

CSS is a styling syntax applied to HTML elements to give them a distinct look and feel. If you’re confused about the difference between HTML and CSS, think of it this way: HTML is the room or rooms of a house, and CSS is the interior decor and design.

CSS brings HTML elements to life. With CSS, you can change the color of an HTML element, add drop-shadows, change alignment or positioning, and much, much more. Without CSS, web interfaces would look extremely bland and boring, hence why it is one of the most important things to learn when building websites.

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. It is compiled or written in a program called an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), such as Sublime or Brackets, or it can also be written simply by using a Text Editor.

CSS is added to a file called the stylesheet (one of many files that make up a full WordPress theme package). If you’re building websites with Divi, you’ll need to create a child theme to protect the Divi theme custom CSS edits you’ve made. Within your child theme, you’ll create a file called style.css and add your custom CSS here. If you are unfamiliar, read our post on using child themes with Divi.

Why You Should Learn CSS

There are many reasons why you should consider learning CSS:

  • You’ll learn a new skill. By improving your skills and abilities, you’ll have a competitive advantage over peer developers. You’ll be able to produce higher quality websites with features that set your designs apart from the rest. With knowledge of CSS, you can fulfill client requests that others cannot.
  • Your work will be unique. If you’ve developed Divi sites for some time, you’ll know that there are a few aspects of the theme that are a dead giveaway. After building several Divi websites, you can recognize one instantly. By learning how to customize HTML and CSS, you can start to create Divi sites that don’t have the standard Divi look and feel, instead, they’ll have your signature style attached to them.
  • You can work with other web platforms. CSS doesn’t stop at Divi or even WordPress. It’s a universal styling syntax that many web interfaces use. Understanding even the basics of HTML and CSS styling will give you the confidence to approach other web publishing platforms with confidence.
  • You can increase your prices. With a new web design skill under your belt, you’ll instantly be more valuable to your clients. Your designs will look more professional and you’ll be able to offer more in a project. With this, you can start to charge higher rates for your work.
  • You can build your business. With all of the benefits mentioned above, you’ll be able to grow your business to new heights. You’ll be able to offer new services, go after more work, take on larger projects and grow your business!

CSS is a skill that’s in demand, and that demand isn’t going away. As CSS is an essential part of web design, it should be top on your list of things to learn.

Customizing Divi with CSS

The Divi theme is a seriously powerful WordPress theme. One of the many reasons that it is so popular is that the drag-and-drop visual builder allows users to make CSS-like styling changes without using code. The visual interface lets you set things like font-size, letter spacing, border qualities and much more, without ever having to write CSS rules or open a stylesheet.

Even though Divi sites can be enhanced using the builder itself, there may come a time where you’d want to go deeper in your customization. You may have a client that requests unique aspects for their site, or, you may want to create a web design that really stands out.

Even if you have a good command of Divi, having a strong grasp of CSS will let you style your website’s sections, rows, and modules even further, as well as styling elements that you normally wouldn’t have access to. Another reason why we love the Divi theme so much is that making customizations to the theme is easy, for example, there are several different ways that you can add CSS to Divi.
